In epoca regia non esisteva ancora la consuetudine, propria del sistema repubblicano, di sottomettere il potere al diritto. Al contrario, il monarca era anche depositario dello ius, e persino dello ius sacrum, essendo i sacerdoti semplicemente coloro che officiavano il culto. Con l'avvento della repubblica tali prerogative verranno conservate, adeguandosi ai tempi, dal magistrato superiore.

In the regal period there did not yet exist the custom, inherent in the Republican system, of making power submit to the law. On the contrary, the king was even depositary of the ius, including the ius sacrum, since the priests were simply those who officiated the cult. With the advent of the Republic, such prerogatives were kept, adapting to the times, by the highest magistrate.
