On a stone block found in a necropolis of the ancient Petelia, near Kroton, are carved two funerary inscriptions dating to the 1st century AD., one Latin and one Greek. From the two texts we know that the stone covered the grave of a five-year boy who belonged to a troupe of pantomimes active in that region and who probably had just performed on the stage. The Greek text, an epigram of six verses, shows a good level of technical expertise and attests the tendency, in late Hellenistic Brettian Petelia, to appreciate Greek culture, as we can ascertain through other significant remains.
