This
research
deals
with
a
group
of
black-glazed
Hellenistic
lamps,
nearly
all
of
which
were
found
during
the
works
on
the
Tiber
embankment
and
are
now
kept
in
the
warehouses
of
the
Museo
Nazionale
Romano.
They
are
of
the
biconical
type,
widespread
throughout
the
Mediterranean,
with
a
number
of
variations
that
indicate
as
many
production
centres.
The
vast
diffusion
of
these
lamps
seems
to
be
due
to
cultural
rather
than
commercial
contacts.
The
recurring
technical
details
and
forms
that
characterise
the
specimens
examined
are
maintained
even
within
the
internal
evolution
of
the
two
sub-groups,
Tevere
1,
with
lug,
and
Tevere
2,
with
handle.
These
characteristics
allow
us
to
trace
them
back
to
the
same
production
centre,
located
in
Rome
or
its
immediate
surroundings,
active
between
the
second
half
of
the
3rd
and
the
first
half
of
the
Ist
century
