The mosaic of via Gasparo da Salô, in Brescia, known since the first half of the 19th century,
is still in its original position as pavement of the cellar of "Casa Cavadini". The mosaic has been
studied mainly because its surface is covered with inscriptions. Local scholars, under the authority
of Th. Mommsen, have dated it to the 5th century A.D., and it is believed that it was once part of a
room in a thermal complex outside the walls of a Roman town. New studies, after restoration of the
decoration and inscriptions, lead us to believe that this pavement may have once belonged to a
balneum of a private house built around the 4th century.
It is known that in the 4th century Brescia
underwent a great period of renovation of both private and public buildings. Moreover there are
new interpretations of the three inscriptions in the central part of the mosaic.
