In this contribution we discuss the new propositions advanced on the religious topography of Ostia by two recently published studies. The first, by A. K. Rieger, examines three sanctuaries (the Quattro Tempietti, the Republican Temples of via della Foce and the Campus of Great Mother), but extends her interest to the religious life of Ostia in general and insists on the importance of the collegia in order to understand the history of the city. The second, by Steuernagel, examines the religious and social life of three Italian port cities (Aquileia, Ostia and Puteoli) through the archaeological evidence. He bases his work on the concept of community, stressing, as does Riegel, the importance of associations, in particular of the collegia, to give meaning to the topography and architecture of the city.
