The article contains a brief summary of the studies in progress on the Roman remains under the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Assisi - known to scholars as the 'domus Musae' - focusing mainly on two inscriptions, found during the excavations, which mention the theatre of the ancient Asisium. One of them is particularly interesting, as it shows the connection of the gens Propertia
with the building of the theatre, and refers to a Sextus Propertius, who could possibly be identified as the well-known poet. The presence of the two monumental inscriptions in the southern area of the city may be of some importance for the location of the ancient theatre building, whose
remains have yet to be identified.
