This article discusses some recently discovered lead pipe inscriptions, as well as various others previously known to us. These inscriptions are of considerable interest since, on the one hand, they contribute to our understanding of the ownership of landed property in Rome and the city surroundings while, on the other hand, several inscriptions contain the name of the plumbarius, or in other words the manufacturer of the lead pipe. In some instances, the terms officina or officinator are encountered.
The point is made that the owner of a site cannot be determined based solely on the name of the plumbarius, although conclusions to that effect have been drawn in some recent studies.
