The exploration of the cemetery area of Monte Del Bufalo at Crustumerium was promoted in 1987
by the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Roma. The main aim of the several campaigns that have
been carried out was to achieve a general knowledge of the archeological context and of its material
culture, also in order to hinder increasing robbing activity and illicit trading.
As soon as the cemetery entered the State property it was also possible to address digging activity
to specific scientific goals, such as the study of the topographical development of the cemetery area
and the evolution of the typology of tombs.
The exploration of a great number of intact burials also
allowed us to arrange the typological study of the artifacts and to determine their association within
the units of grave goods.
The data yielded by the cemetery area of Monte Del Bufalo at the moment can be considered as
representative of the funerary aspect of the ancient town, and contribute to point out its strong local
feature. At the same time, the reception of cultural elements from neighbouring regions (not only
architectural models for the tombs of Orientalizing period, but also imported materials and possible
related “ways of life”) underline the role of Crustumerium as a Latin frontier settlement towards the
Etruscans and the Sabines.
