Grumentum: l'acquedotto romano

In questo articolo si affronta il tema del l’acquedotto romano di Grumentum: grazie a indagini topografiche e ricognizioni archeologiche, corredate dall’analisi critica delle fonti scritte e dalla lettura delle fotografie aeree, proponiamo la ricostruzione integrale del percorso, dalle sorgenti fino al castellum aquae. I nuovi dati del survey sono integrati da dati inediti di scavi d’emergenza condotti dalla Soprintendenza, che ha indagato un tratto sotterraneo della struttura. I rilievi e l’analisi dell’elevato nei tratti con strutture in alzato hanno permesso di ricostruire la tecnica edilizia e di inquadrarne la realizzazione in concomitanza con la monumentalizzazione e la possibile deduzione coloniale del centro, a compimento del processo di romanizzazione dell’area. Infine, è stato possibile ricostruire la pendenza media e le pendenze nei vari tratti e la portata, grazie alle ricerche condotte sullo speco nei settori in cui questo si conserva integralmente.


In this paper, we talk about the Roman aqueduct of Grumentum: thanks to the topographical research, to the archaeological survey, to the analysis of the written sources and to the aerial photo interpretation, we present the reconstruction of the whole route of the structure, from the springs to the castellum aquae. The new data from the survey are combined with unpublished data from gas plumbing preventive archaeological excavations, conducted by the Soprintendenza, who has investigated a subterranean part of the aqueduct. The landsurvey and the analysis of the building have permitted to study the construction technique; therefore, it’s been possible to date the structure at the same time of the monumental growth of Grumentum (together with the foundation of the Roman colony), completing the Romanization process of the area. Moreover, we suppose the mean grade of the aqueduct, the grades in the different areas and the flow rate, thanks to the researchconducted on the specus (the canal) in the segments where it’s well preserved.
