Gustavo Giovannoni and Guglielmo De Angelis d’Ossat. Contributions to the history of the Abbey of
Montecassino
Many architects and scholars of architecture since the Renaissance have gone to the abbey of Montecassino
to study the great Benedictine monument. Among them two great scholars of the twentieth century:
Gustavo Giovannoni and Guglielmo De Angelis d’Ossat, whose contribution was fundamental to the
history of Montecassino architecture and who were part of the Commission for the rebuilding of the
Abbey after its destruction together with exponents of the clergy and the Italian republic.
Regarding Giovannoni some surveys by him will be analysed; they are precious and most valuable
both for the history of the destroyed Abbey and for Montecassino post-war reconstruction. Personal
notes and reflections contained in a draft of the Commission report for the reconstruction will be
presented regarding De Angelis d’Ossat; they are inserted in a small typewritten document in his
personal library.
