Gustavo Giovannoni and the Protection of Natural Beauty
The issue concerning the protection of natural beauty had a very important position in the vast and
articulated professional activities of Gustavo Giovannoni, so much as to significantly influence his
own personality. Such is also attributed to the endless passion that the Architect had for the natural
environment which accompanied him during the course of his entire existence. His commitment in
this field is collocated in the context of the greatest international debate regarding the protection of the
landscape which lasts for over thirty years, starting from “hands-on experimentation” to the formulation
of legislative acts or of theoretical reflections on the argument. The path of this cultural course found its
natural conclusion with the prestigious appointment of President of the Ministerial Commission for the
adoption of the new law for «The Protection of Natural Beauty», approved on 29 June, 1939 (n. 1497),
of which he was the principal inspirer.
