The results of the archaeological excavations carried out in 2008 in the square of piazza San Lorenzo at Formello, Rome ‒ formerly object of a preliminary publication in this journal (Damiani, Sechi 2009) ‒ are examined in depth in this paper, including the discovery of granaries and cisterns dating from the central centuries of the Middle Age, a defensive moat of the end of
the 13th
century, and traces of urbanization of the 15th
century.
This evidence is compared with archaeological research carried out systematically at Formello from 1992 on, in coincidence
with the institution of the local Museo dell’Agro Veientano.
The article offers a synthesis of all available evidence for Formello, as well as some data from unpublished sources from local
archives, which provide new information on the ‘incastellamento’-phases (10th
-11th
centuries) in this minor center of the Tuscia
Romana, and its transformation throughout the Middle Age and the Renaissance under the political, economic and cultural
influence of the Orsini family.
