‘Yanbicheng Rome’ a famous Chinese legal expression, means ‘when they speak of the constitution or the law, they must refer to Roman law’. Roman law was introduced into China at the end of the Qing dynasty and became a valuable source of reference for legislation. Today, the Roman legal experience is a key element of knowledge that guides the current doctrine of Chinese civil law. It has penetrated completely into both the theory researching and the practice of civil law. Through this penetration, Roman law influences the legislation of Chinese civil law. In short, ‘yanbicheng Rome’ was not only a historical choice of the Qing Dynasty authorities, but also has become a very important material for the China civil code.
