antica storia dell’insediamento.
avanzata linea difensiva, posta a protezione
dei quartieri produttivi suburbani. Altri dati
The town-walls of Vulci have been object,
between the years 2000-2010, of systematic researches, focused on the northern part of the
inhabited area, discovering, moreover, some
aspects connected to the origin of the settlement. In fact, in the zone around the Porta
Ovest it has been found part of a defensive barrage built up, about in the half-second half of
the eight century BC, over the remains of huts
dated in the tenth and in the ninth centuries
BC. Archaeological investigations on the layout
of the enclosure walls, relate to the Etruscan
city, do not have pointed out the existence of
fortifications of archaic period, but they have
allowed to assure that the town-walls, in opus
quadratum, follow, without any break along
their run, the edge of the urban flat ground and that they were built, according a unique
project, about in the half-second half of the
fourth century BC. At the same period it may
be dated a second advanced defensive line of
walls for the safeguarding of suburban productive districts. Other data are referred to the
gateways of northern zone of the city and to
their fortifications: in particular those of the
Porta Ovest have characteristics such to prove
the introduction of innovative strategic systems, assuring that Vulci had a fundamental
role in the defensive architecture of the Etruria
in the period between the middle of fourth
century and the beginning of third century BC.
