Osservazioni e ipotesi sulla forma urbana di Nuceria Alfaterna

The aim of this paper is to provide a revised and updated analysis of the topographical problems which still concern the ancient urban plan of Nuceria Alfaterna. This plan was first identified with very few data by Fresa brothers and then, above all, by W. Johannowsky, and some data have been added by other scholars more recently. An integrated approach, combining archaeological data, aerial photography and historical cartography, allows a more critical interpretation. Several road elements, so, can be integrated into an urban grid based on the Roman measure of double actus. This gives us the opportunity to recognize the great restructuring of Nuceria after the destruction by Hannibal’s army in 216 BC as an example of early Romanization of the center.
