L'influenza dell'antichità romana in Spagna: lo stile pompeiano nei secoli XVIII e XIX

The influence of Roman antiquity on eighteenth and nineteenth-century Spain is evident in several contexts. One is art, and particularly building decoration. This article studies how the Pompeian style made its first appearance in the palaces of kings and the upper nobility, to then spread to the homes of the middle class and to some public buildings – albeit restricted to an elite – that conformed with the Neoclassic taste of their time. The author’s excursus begins with some buildings erected at the behest of Charles III and his son Charles IV, and concludes with others whose construction was financed by the middle class at the beginning of the twentieth century. The evolution of artistic trends and changes in sponsors’ taste determined transformations in this style, which could not remain impervious to innovations, but nevertheless managed to adapt to survive through changing times.

La influencia de la Antigüedad romana es evidente en la España de los siglos XVIII y XIX en ámbitos muy variados. Uno de ellos es el arte y más concretamente, la decoración de edificios. Este artículo estudia cómo el estilo pompeyano se hizo presente en los palacios de los monarcas y de la alta nobleza para pasar después a las mansiones de la burguesía y a unos edificios públicos – aunque restringidos a una elite- que se adaptaban al gusto neoclásico. El recorrido comienza con algunas construcciones patrocinadas por Carlos III y su hijo, Carlos IV, y finaliza con construcciones financiadas por la burguesía en los albores del siglo XX. La evolución de las corrientes artísticas y la variación del gusto de los patrocinadores produjo transformaciones en un estilo que no podía permanecer ajeno a las innovaciones pero que supo adaptarse para seguir estando presente a lo largo del tiempo.
