The UNESCO “Strategic Plan” for the development of the territory included in the Buffer Zone of the Site of the ‘Archaeological areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata’, adopted on 20/03/2018 by the ‘Management Committee’ of the Grande Progetto Pompei, provides for: a) the improvement of accessibility and interconnecting systems between the archaeological Sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata; b) environmental requalification also reutilizing disused industrial areas; c) urban requalification and regeneration of towns present in the area; d) the promotion of archaeological and cultural heritage in order to further develop sustainable tourism. The Grande Progetto Pompei was established as an extraordinary conservation Program of preservation, maintenance and restoration of the archaeological Area of Pompeii, with the objectives of halting the deterioration of the buildings and architectural and decorative features, containing hydrogeological risks and of improving the overall fruition of the Site. The project introduced innovative methods of intervention for conservation, protection and enhancement in the archaeological Area of Pompeii and, therefore, also in the Insula Occidentalis.
