Le scommesse sui giochi virtutis causa in diritto romano

The paper concerns the regulation of bettings. In particular, it focuses on bettings that were allowed if made in non-working days or related to the outcome of athletic games. Reading the sources, we analyse the idea that Romans had of athletes and their privileges. We highlight the passage from a moment when bets on athleitc games were allowed, to a subsequent moment when these bets were severely punished, because professionals gained good incomes from these activities.
