  • Abstract

Amicitia nel Rinascimento is a critical edition publishing all the Latin poems by Baldassarre Castiglione ( 1529) and Domizio Falcone ( 1505), some for the very first time, each one accompanied by a faithful modern Italian translation and an ample commentary on the classical and medieval sources deployed, the cultural echoes and the implicit allusiveness therein. A hitherto unnoticed grid of relationships emerges not only between the two Renaissance authors, the first of whom famous today for his Book of the Courtier, the second one hardly known at all, not even in the pertinent scholarship, but also between them and their world as variously experienced at the Gonzaga court in Mantua, the Montefeltro Court in Urbino and the papal court in Rome fluctuating amid political game-playing and mutable alliances, the new roles of court poet, painter and intellectual, the heated debate on courtly language, and the evolution in the definitions and status of love-games and sexuality. A new Castiglione is thus outlined, more complete and revealing than otherwise portrayed through the Book of the Courtier, next to a Falcone who, far from being unknown, is rather extolled by Isabella d'Este, Angelo Colocci and Pietro Bembo as a much- and widely-appreciated expert not only on the poetry of love in all its facets, but also on ekphrasis ranging from ancient and modern sculpture and painting through to the great Mantegna himself.
