This chapter discusses the evolution of housing in
the suburbs of Quebec City over one century, from
physical, social and behavioural perspectives.
This longitudinal perspective identified the
permanent and changing features of housing
and urban development during a period of rapid
urbanization. A series of interdisciplinary studies
were completed between 1992 and 2007 at
the School of Architecture at Laval University.
The periods of housing construction and urban
development included in this chapter began in
the late 19th century with the densification of
inner city quarters and speculative building.
A second period from about 1910 to 1940 included the construction of tenements in three-storey
buildings in new suburbs adjacent to the old city.
Then from 1950 to about 1975, detached houses
and small residential buildings were built in a
large network of interconnected streets with a
functional layout. Then, from about 1980, a period of reurbanisation began in inner city neighbourhoods at the same time as the construction
of new low density housing on the outskirts of
the agglomeration.
Each of the four periods presented in this chapter
includes a spatial, social and behavioural analysis
that identifies how the housing and community
infrastructure adapted to accommodate new
life styles, meanings and representations of
domestic life. The conclusion includes a critical
discussion about the development of Quebec and
its metropolitan region with respect to recent
demographic projections, including an ageing
population, infrastructure in need of repair and
the requirements for sustainable development.
