In 2012-2013, the Department of Antiquities of Libya (DoA) carried out an archaeological survey at Sidi Mohamed Sherif, near Qasr Khiyar, along the coast approximately 45 km west of Lepcis Magna. Sidi Mohamed Sherif is here identified with the place of Ain Fara, mentioned by the Sheikh al-Tijani at the beginning of the 14 th century. In 1929 the site was reported by Renato Bartoccini, who briefly described its remains, the presence of landing places and the productive features of the surrounding area. Recent research has confirmed the productive aspects of the site (olive oil presses and pottery kilns) and its commercial nature. Moreover, a bath complex, attributed to a maritime villa, has been detected. Further in-depth research taking into account the importance of the site, as well as the intensive agricultural exploitation of the hinterland, is desirable.
