This paper illustrates the results of the studies about black glazed pottery and terra sigillata of the “insula del Centenario” in Pompeii. The
project “Pompei, insula del Centenario (IX 8)” was started in 1999 by Bologna University with the partnership of the Parco Archeologico
di Pompei and the collaboration of Parma University.
The ceramic material from the excavations provided several information not only about terra sigillata italica, the most important table-ware of the Roman imperial period, but also about black glazed pottery, founded in the deep excavations under the floors of 79 AD.
The typological study has been crossed with the observation of the clays samples, partially subjected to archaeometric analysis, in order to
obtain information about the origin of the vessels.
The results obtained demonstrate that 87% of the black glazed pottery and 53% of the terra sigillata italica specimens were produced in
Campanian pottery workshops, while the imports of tableware both in Republican age and in Imperial age seem limited.
