This essay addresses the problem of the representation of the landscape as an integrated reality connecting artefacts as a network of relations constantly changing or re-assessed through time and space. Based on this definition, a new operating tool has been developed (the Archaeological Information System), merging and combining new and traditional methods to help in recreating the missing relations of the original network expressing the changing archeological landscapes. In the information system they were stored bibliographic and cartographic data relating to all the monuments and buildings of Rome. This computer update of the knowledge tools related to ancient Rome is particularly valuable and innovative if one thinks that the best tool available to scholars is still the precious “Form” of Lanciani published between 1893 and 1901. The Archaeological Map of Rome (drawn up from 1947 onwards) on the initiative of the Italian state, unfortunately is in fact focused on the representation of the findings mainly through the use of symbols. Cultural Communication, and therefore Narrative, is considered as an essential requirement of the research developed within this framework (the author provides some examples in this regard). Reformulating the traces of the eras that preceded us in narrative form, it will be possible to completely integrate the historical reconstruction with descriptions and sequences of ‘small’ and defined events as the only way to bring the real flow of monuments, landscapes and people back to the historical dimension.
