Andrea Mantegna e Tivoli. Alcune note di topografia tiburtina tra l’età romana e la seconda metà del Quattrocento
In: Bullettino della Commissione Archeologica Comunale di Roma: 121, 2020
Besides various quotes of ancient Rome with its walls and monuments, the decoration of the fifteenth century «Camera degli Sposi» in Mantova, painted by Andrea Mantegna, includes the sanctuary of Hercules Victorious in Tivoli. This paper is based on interdisciplinary studies, focusing on the ancient and Renaissance topography of the town, considering how Mantegna might have learned the details present in the painting. The possibility of a direct view of the monuments still visible in his time is not ruled out.
