This report addresses the controversial attitude of Donato Bramante, who on the one hand suggested the destruction of the Constantinian structures in the process of reconstruction of the new basilica of St. Peter, and on the other hand, turned his attention to Hadrianic architecture. Regarding Roman architecture, the idea that direct inspiration for the design of the cloister of Santa Maria della Pace could be found in the rooms at Villa Adriana will be verified, by investigating the proportional relationship between the courtyards of Santa Maria della Pace and those in the libraries at Villa Adriana. Another building in which Hadrian’s evocations can found is the small temple of San Pietro in Montorio, which combines influences from the Maritime Theater with the tholos of Venus of Knidus. The prime example of the most references to Villa Adriana is the Cortile del Belvedere, where he draws attention to the hippodrome-villa relationship described by Pliny. Starting from these cases, we intend to verify the effect of the study of Hadrian’s architecture on Bramante’s projects, both in Rome as well as in the Roman countryside.
