Enrica Fiandra. An Architect-Archaeologist
Enrica Fiandra was the director of the joint Italian-Libyan Mission “Flavian Temple” for many years. Her work began in 1964: as architect of the Mission of the Universtà degli Studi di Perugia, the activities of which she directed until 1969, when the University suspended the mission. After a ten-year interruption, archaeological activities were resumed in 1979. Excavations carried out in the following years clarified the phases of the monumental structure of the Domitian period endowed with sacred and commercial functions, located on the western quay of the port of Lepcis Magna. Despite
natural disasters, the complex with its imposing structure survived and continued to be frequented during various phases until the 10th century CE.
In this contribution, the history of the temple and of the mission are intertwined with the memories and experiences of the author for over forty years alongside this internationally renowned scholar.
