The project in the modern city contexts: a critical approach to urban morphology of twentieth century fabrics
Starting from the studies on urban morphology, this text aims to capture the answers to the crisis of the “Modern” in the vast and complex debate
that has developed particularly on the periphery of the second postwar period. In the Italian culture of the first half of the twentieth century, indeed, the analysis of historical urban models had not yet produced a “science” of urban structure but focused mainly on the phenomenological reading of form. With the overcoming of this vision, research on the analysis-project relationship has exercised a fundamental influence on contemporary design and urban morphology
has represented, and still represents, a fundamental critical tool with respect to the “linear” approach to development. A tool that helps to overcome the crisis of the relationship between man and the environment and to rebuild the
necessary level of complexity, of inter-scalar and intersectoral relationships, according to a critique of the “consumption of the image”. The
reference to studies and projects on the founding cities in Sardinia completes this “operating” vision of the morphological method, together with a conscious interpretation of the form of the settlement as a matrix of identity and cultural manifesto of an era.
