Con quali metodi si può risalire alla stima delle portate affl uenti, partendo dai dettagli geometrici dei componenti idraulici dei bacini? Questo studio presenta i risultati ottenuti per le fontane pubbliche di piccolo volume, o ‘lacus’ visibili nel sito archeologico di Ercolano, con un metodo per la stima dei possibili range di portate, basato sui dettagli degli orifi zi per i tubi di alimentazione e sulla forma e grandezza dei canali di troppo pieno. I risultati ottenuti per Ercolano individuano un range di portate tra 0.05 e 6.9 l/s, con valori minimi e massimi superiori a quelli di 0.03-2.5 l/s ottenuti, con considerazioni simili, per i lacus Pompeiani. Il tempo di permanenza dell’acqua nei bacini, che defi nisce la qualità dell’acqua, si è trovato nei due casi inferiore alle 4 ore.
The public fountains in the ancient cities of the Roman Empire were the main source of drinking water for the population, but also a fl agship for urbanization programs of the Republican and Imperial age. Which quantities were distributed daily to the population? What method can be used to estimate the flowrates supplied, starting from the geometry of the hydraulic features of the basins? Th is study presents the results obtained for public fountains of small volume - the lacus -, visible in Herculaneum, through an estimate of the basin discharge, based on the geometry of orifi ces and overfl ow channels. The results obtained for Herculaneum are in the range 0.05-6.9 l/s, while for the Pompeian lacus was found, in a previous study, the range 0.03- 2.5 l/s. Th e hydraulic retention time, relevant for the water quality, was found in both cases below 4 hours.
