Cives e polítai : connubî, famiglia e successioni in Oriente tra Adriano e Caracalla : una breve ricognizione delle fonti

This research focuses on the study of ius conubii and the problems posed by the spread of citizenship in the póleis of the Greek East. Children of mixed families, in which only one of the parents was a Roman citizen, were not counted among the legitimate children (at least until the promulgation of a senatusconsultum of the Hadrianic age). They also could not inherit from their Roman parent. Antoninus Pius, as the periegeta Pausanias recalls, allowed sons to receive their fathers’ inheritances. This measure placed Roman and mixed families on an equal level in the intergenerational transmission of wealth, significantly affecting the demographic and matrimonial strategies of the aristocratic groups in the póleis of the Greek East before the issuing of the constitutio Antoniniana.
