The wall paintings of plants, flowers and fruits found in the Villa A (Villa of Poppaea) in Oplontis allow us to desume at least in part the plants which were known to the Romans in the first century AD.
Through the comparison of the botanical features of the present day plants with those of the paintings 16 plants were identified with certainty at species level while in four more cases only the plant genus could be detected. A list with the botanical and Italian names and the rooms in which all the plants are depicted is given. However, these data do not allow to rebuild the botanical landscape occurring around Pompeii at the time of the eruption in 79 AD. The increasing problems of the damages affecting the wall paintings of the Villa are also highlighted.
