The historiographical reconstruction of the receptum argentarii, the promise of payment issued by Roman bankers, relies exclusively on few passages of legal literature of Justinianic age. Scholarly hypotheses, however, have maintained that three wax tables found in Pompeii could be considered as specimens of this legal practice. This article aims at analysing such theses through an overall analysis of the business documents, eventually making critical remarks and proposing different interpretations.
