Su un miliario della via Appia (dal Decennovium) (CIL, X 6834 = AE 1990, 131l)

Belonging to the series of Trajanic milestones dated to 110 A.D. set along a paved road of 19 miles in length, the ancient Decennovium, is a fragment of a milestone preserved in the papal staging post of Casale di Mesa (Pontinia, LT). This contribution proposes identification of the milestone with the one published in CIL, X 6834: what seems to be decisive here is the evidence of letters inscribed in a subsequent period on the surface overlying the surviving Trajanic inscription (NAT); the same letters can be read in the first line of the apograph reproduced by Mommsen. The number of miles indicated here, VIII, is different from the number we read today on the Casale di Mesa stone (II): assuming that it has suffered further mutilations, and excluding the number XLVIII as completed by Mommsen, already present in the series and indeed well preserved (CIL, X 6833), what remains is the number LVIII.
The milestone, therefore, appears to have come from the area of Feronia, i.e. from the end of the Decennovium: subsequent displacements must have shifted it to the Forum Appii, where Giovenazzi reported having seen the stone, and eventually to Casale di Mesa.
