Nuove iscrizioni da Segni e iscrizioni riguardanti Segni

The first part of this contribution presents a number of new epigraphic documents originating from the research undertaken by the Archaeological Museum of Segni. The two inscriptions, which can be dated to between the second half of the 2nd century BC and 90-89 BC, mention various people belonging to the elites of the free city: the Memmi, the Volumnii and the Sextilii. These new documents offer a fuller picture, based upon more extensive documentary evidence, of the panorama of the gentes responsible for the great revival of Segni in the late Hellenic period, and provide a basis for discussion of their history at the highest levels of society, drawing particular attention to the crucial period spanning the second decade of the 1st century BC. A similar area is pointed to with the document presented in the second part of the article, pertaining to a mercator from Signia in Macedonia: the inscription of M’. Curtius from the Serapeion in Thessalonica, most probably of the late 2nd century BC, shows a new exponent of the elites of the free city, the first to be seen engaged in pursuit of commercial activity in the east.
Finally, two inscriptions from an urban context prompt discussion of the life of the municipium in the Imperial period: the first probably records the Statio Signinorum, the reference point for the economic interests of the city in Rome, the second P. Cordfidius Signinus, whose relationship with the city can be pieced together on the evidence of the uncommon cognomen, and also of his work as a pomarius which, the sources suggest, dealt with agricultural activity in Signia.
