Il dissesto geologico del Palatino ha coinvolto fin dal collaudo la Domus Flavia che,
con i suoi enormi carichi, ha accentuato i movimenti fondali obbligando, già in età adrianea, a consistenti consolidamenti strutturali.
I ricorrenti terremoti hanno accentuato le
lesioni finché, con Teodorico, si provvide ad
un ulteriore, definitivo, intervento che modificò in modo sostanziale l’aspetto della fronte
settentrionale che fu scalpellata rastremandola progressivamente per tutta l’altezza.
L’analisi ha evidenziato anche il travisamento della situazione strutturale originaria
in occasione dei restauri degli anni ’80 del secolo scorso.
The geological instability of the Palatine
hill has involved the Domus Flavia since its
testing; the cause was the huge loading of the
construction increasing the movements of the
foundation, requiring remarkable structural
consolidations already in the age of Hadrian.
Injuries were increased by frequent earthquakes, until Theodoric made a new and definitive intervention of restoration changing
substantially the north face of the palace,
which was reduced the whole height long by
chiseling.
The analysis has also stressed the misunderstanding of the original structural situation
during the restorations in the eighties of the
last century.
