Il Porto di Miseno

Il porto di Miseno, divenuto sotto Augusto sede della la più importante flotta navale romana, si trova nella costa Flegrea, area notoriamente interessata da movimenti vulcano-tettonici che hanno provocato la sommersione di ampie zone del litorale rendendo oltremodo complesso giungere a delineare un quadro d’insieme dell’antica topografia costiera e in particolar modo delle strutture portuali oggi interamente sommerse. Anche se l’esistenza di strutture sommerse all’interno del bacino naturale di Miseno è nota da tempo, solo in anni recenti studi sistematici hanno contribuito a comporre un quadro, non ancora esaustivo, dell’antico impianto portuale. In quest’ottica, l’articolo intende ricomporre l’assetto topografico generale dell’impianto portuale anche con il contributo di nuove acquisizioni.


The port of Misenum, that under Augustus became the seat of the most important Roman fleet, is located in the Phlegraean coast. The area is known to be affected by volcano-tectonic movements that still today cause the submergence of large zones of the coast. It is therefore extremely complex to obtain an overview of the ancient coastal topography and especially to define the port structure, now completely submerged. Although the existence of submerged structures within the natural basin of Misenum has long been known, only recently systematic studies have started to give a clearer description of the ancient site. In this regard, the present paper aims to recompose the general topographic arrangement of the port, also through the acquisition of new data.
