During archaeological excavations of the ancient port of Vada Volaterrana, in the area of
modern Rosignano, a statue of the Phrygian god Attis was discovered. For an archaeological
context lacking in remarkable marble finds, this discovery proves of a certain importance. Attis is
naked, with only a mantel covering his shoulders - an iconography occurring rarely among the
sculptures, inviting comparison with a statue discovered in Rome and another one conserved in the
Museum of Sarsina.
The Attis of Vada, dated around the middle of the second century AD, could
testify to the presence of a place devoted to oriental gods, which was not unusual in port cities.
