The article illustrates the role played by the Duke Antonio Maria Salviati in organising an
antiquity collection in his Roman residence, "Palazzo alla Lungara".
Letters and inventories document how this collection grew with the transfer of many art
works already in the family's ownership since the end of 16th century, and hitherto kept in some of
the family's Tuscan estates; so was that the Duke set about enriching his palazzo and enhancing
the family prestige.
After the death of Antonio Maria, in the 18th century, the collection was gradually dispersed
through hereditary matters and sale to foreign aristocrats: some of the works, originally owned by
the Salviati family, have been identified in their collections.
