Some recent studies have taken into consideration matters which concern the period of the
foundation of
Ariminum.
It has been assumed, for instance, that the first architectonical works of
the colony did not comprise the building of the boundary walls and that the Latin immigrants still
practised ancient local cults linked to a Greek tradition. However, the validity of those ideas has
been decidedly refuted with a new approach to the most ancient and significant archaeological
evidence of the city, including the series of coins and pocola
deorum,
which were produced locally,
and indeed the city walls themselves.
In the light of the most recent excavations and analysis of
their records, in fact, an early urban organization appears evident. Probably it was preceded by a
Roman settlement before 268 B.C. Furthermore we must not forget the fully Latin characterization
of the colonists, aligned programmatically with the political and cultural models of their
motherland.
