At a distance of over fifty years from the meritorious restoration work on the major historical buildings of Ferentino, the forepart of the «acropolis» still represents evidence of extraordinary interest for students and the public, without doubt the most illustrious monument of the ancient city and among the most remarkable and celebrated in the panorama of Roman-Italic architecture in the late-republican age, in particular in virtue of the extensive debate that has developed around the interpretation of its dedicatory inscriptions. Based on a recent re-examination of the available archaeological data, we introduce here a new reading of the architectural, constructional and formal characteristics of the monument, with the aim on one hand of clarifying some «critical» aspects, and, on the other hand, of re-contextualising it within the building production of the same period in central Italy, our knowledge of which has become greatly enhanced and detailed over the last few years, thanks to a series of new acquisitions and discoveries or revision of previous assumptions. A new hypothesis is, moreover, advanced on the interpretation of the great inscriptions set on the outer sides of the building.
