This paper moves from an international exhibition about Roman ‘trade-marks’ called Made in Roma, that took place in the building of Trajan’s Markets in Rome between May and December 2016. In many articles written by archeologists thereon they focus on the great importance of these signa by a lot of points of view. Basing on a method adopted by Feliciano Serrao in the late 80s of last century, shortly followed by other scholars and then given up, the author wants to check the utility of a comparison between data coming from the inscriptions contained in the ‘trademarks’ exposed and data offered by legal sources. Three are the matters analyzed through such method: hiring of commercial and production unities in the form of locatio conductio rei, female work as entrepreneurs or managers in production and commercial activities and possible ways to legally protect trademarks. The outcomes show an increasing need to develop historical researches in Roman economy of the late Republic and early and medium Empire by means of a joint consideration of archeological and legal evidences.
