The paper focuses on new data on local production of fine ware at Pompeii between the late IV and the mid- III century AD. Data are
the results of an integrated approach to archaeological ceramics retrieved by 1980-1981 excavations at the Forum of Pompeii. Ceramological and archaeometric analyses combined outline a complex picture of local production of black gloss, “Gnathia (style) ware”,
“Gnathia (style) ware” with reserved or band-decorated external surfaces, red figured ware and Hellenistic band-decorated ware. The
ceramics not only illustrate the productivity capacity of Pompeii in its early stages of development but also prove to be a valuable tool in
order to explore issues on cultural interaction and transfer of technological knowledge among communities living in the Vesuvian region,
in ancient Campania and nearby regions.
