In 2015 a three year multidisciplinary research project was begun in order to fully document and analyse the necropolis of Porta Nola
through the application of geophysics, osteology, excavation, material analysis, archival studies and conservation, combined with a new
study of the plastercasts of the bodies made outside Porta Nola. This paper presents the preliminary results of a new study of the known
monuments of the necropolis as well as a series of new excavations. Preliminary results suggest a late chronology for the necropolis, based
upon evidence of a systematic levelling of the area through the dumping of material. Analysis of this assemblage, which also included
plaster, rubble and other material, offers a new insight to the ceramic production and circulation in Pompeii as several indications of local
production were recorded.
