The northern corner of Insula Occidentalis, adjacent to and corresponding to Porta Ercolano, plays a crucial role in connecting intra moenia buildings, the necropolis of via dei Sepolcri, the north-western limit of the walls, the great suburban domus and the ager pompeianus. Within this context of research and having defined specific topics to investigate, new hypotheses for the improvement of accessibility have been examined on the basis of literary and iconographic sources, together with the on-site knowledge regarding the physical feature of the ruins and their multiple ‘immaterial’ meanings. The solutions aim at promoting new ways of perceiving the site, especially with the walls, and have been analysed in relation with criteria of visual and technical-constructive compatibility between the antique and the new additions and regarding absolute respect for historical artefacts.
