The north-western section of the Pompeian walls between Porta Ercolano and Porta Vesuvio is one of the best preserved and most evocative part of the entire walls and it shows traces of long construction history and ancient or more recent restorations. In this paper, the interpretation of such material evidence and indirect sources is associated with an assessment of the state of conservation and the ways for a better fruition of the defensive system. Differentiated hypothetical tour routes, both external and climbing up to the walkway, are examined, suggesting alternative solutions aimed at improving accessibility both in a physical and visual sense, as well as at ‘revealing’ the architectural and scenic values of this part of the ancient city.
