Secondo le teorie mediche medievali, sviluppatesi a partire dal capitolo sull’amor hereos del Viaticum di Co-stantino Africano, l’origine della passione amorosa è riconducibile a un errore di valutazione della virtus estimativa, che è ritenuta la più nobile delle virtù interiori dell’anima sensitiva. Il presente intervento intende ipotizzare che Cavalcanti e Dante, che senz’altro conoscono tali teorie, in due luoghi assai discussi della loro lirica, rispettivamente Donna me prega, vv. 29-34, e E’ m’incresce di me sì duramente, vv. 71-84, alludano proprio alla virtus estimativa.
Love as an error of the virtus estimativa in Cavalcanti and Dante
According to medieval medical theories, developed from the chapter on the amor hereos of Constantine Africanus’ Viaticum, the origin of love passion is due to an error of evaluation of the virtus estimativa, which is considered the noblest of the inner virtues of the sensitive soul. This paper suggests that Cavalcanti and Dante allude to the estimative virtus in two highly discussed places of their poetry, respec-tively Donna me prega, vv. 29-34 and E’ m’incresce di me sì duramente, vv. 71-84.
