Libya has been in a state of instability for far too long because of the innumerable internal conflicts, and therefore the
time has come to join forces. In archaeological areas of the territory, contrary to what one might think, the most frequently encountered problems are not related to damage due to war but rather due to other anthropogenic risks, such
as vandalism, construction of new buildings, looting etc. From the beginning of the war, the Università di Chieti, in
collaboration with the DoA Cyrene and other universities has been carrying out a project to monitor areas at risk to try
to stop the destruction of many still unknown sites. Even if there is already a good law on the protection of antiquities,
there are still many problems in terms of its application and adherence. In this sense, the DoA is using its authority to
mitigate this disaster by engaging in raising the awareness of the general population, through radio communications,
exhibitions, student workshops and visits to the main sites. They also expend considerable time and resources in attempts to recover stolen antiquities, encouraging the return of material found during illegal excavations. The hope is
to be able to stop this damaging situation, which is possible by archaeological missions joining forces with the DoA and
involving the whole population.
