The paper analyses how Winckelmann included the temples of Paestum in a narrative aiming at reaffirming the originality and autonomy of Greek art and architecture. By introducing the people (Volk) as an (art)-historical subject that re-enacts natural, ahistorical, evolutionary processes, Winckelmann inaugurated a tradition of disciplining and categorizing the history of the ancient Mediterranean with far-reaching implications that can still be felt today. In particular, the notion of the primitive and the simple, on which Winckelmann elaborates based on Vitruvius’ account on the formation of the Doric order, becomes a model for the stylisation of ancient Greek culture as the genuine and historically unconditioned roots of modern European culture.
