Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s approach to Antiquity is based on a creative and eclectic elaboration of stylistic and iconographic elements, for the purpose of creating an overloaded visual language, with a strong effect: this attitude has been interpreted both as a Late-Baroque persistence and a Pre-Romantic anticipation. Piranesi’s theoretical positions were strongly criticized by the advocates of Neoclassicism; nevertheless, for various decades they had a big influence on the production of furniture and on the artistic craftsmanship all over Europe. The present paper considers some precious object, produced in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies between the end of the eighteenth and the first decades of the nineteenth centuries, on which piranesian direct or indirect influence can be recognized.
