This contribution introduces the research results of the recent excavations made on the underground sector of the Escuela Española de Historia y Arqueología (Rome). The studies were developed during the architectonic restoration of the center. After first taking archaeological emergency measures, diverse research activities have been addressed, focusing on the strategic position of these buildings between the
Campo Marzio
and the slope of the
Quirinale
hill. These mainly involve stratigraphic and archaeometric analysis of the
remains in addition to defining their topographic and historical context.
Even though the results are derived from a rather restricted
area, they bring to light relevant aspects of the diachronic evolution of the buildings and their relationship with the main constructive activities placed on one side of the Foro di Traiano, an area that has lacked relevant archaeological information. The discovery led to the opportunity to re-examine the topography of the area in the period between the Republican and the Imperial eras with particular attention to the distribution of burials and the path of the pomerium.
