Methodological and programmatic guidelines in restoration interventions
Conservation, recovery of a historical facies, and reintegration of architectural “gaps” strongly impacting
with interventions reminescent of the pre-existing configuration: this is the discipline of restoration.
The
sites illustrated, thanks to the precious contribution and advices of Prof. Giovanni Carbonara, are examples
of the complexity of this specialized discipline. The major challenges of this specialized field were: for the
Episcope of Port the recovery both of the main elevation and of the eighteenth-century court, and the
recomposition of the multi-layered perimeter walls; for Santa Maria Assunta at Ariccia the recovery and
recomposition of the historical facies of the church hemicycles; for the Abbey of Sant’Andrea in flumine
the structural consolidation of the complex with the pre-existing layout; for Santa Maria in Gradi at
Viterbo, the restoration in its many aspects, from the conservative restoration in the lower area of the
church, to the reintegration in the intermediate band and in the roof through a contemporary structural
solution, but in an evocative key of the existing vault. This last intervention which, with deep regret, was
not concluded for lack of funds, will be completed, hopefully in a near future, to full reintegrate a valuable
architecture of Nicola Salvi.
